Jerry died peacefully in his home in Walden on January 2, 2015 at the age of 87. He passed knowing that he did a wonderful job raising his family and that they loved him very much.
Born April 18, 1927 as the first child of Jeremiah and Jane "Daisy" Whitaker, Jerry grew up in Newburgh, NY. After attending Newburgh Free Academy, Jerry twice enlisted in the United States Navy. His combined seven plus years of service spanned from the end of World War II in the Pacific to the Korean War conflict, serving aboard the USS Mount McKinley.
He married the love of his life, Dorothy (Dotty) Van Leuven in 1954. They lived and raised their family in Walden.
He retired from the New York State Thruway Authority after being employed as a Toll Supervisor for over 35 years. He worked part-time in his retirement for Gridley-Horan Funeral Home as the "man at the door" for many years.
Jerry's faith was strong and he was a Cursillo member and a member of Most Precious Blood parish in Walden. Jerry spent many years serving the Walden community as a member of the Orange Hose Fire Co. along with the Knights of Columbus. He served as secretary and treasurer in the Fire Dept. as well as in the Fire Police in his retirement.
Jerry had a lifelong love affair with Drum Corps. He was a member of the VFW Post Corps and The Criterions in Newburgh in his youth and a Color Guard Instructor for Circleville Drum and Bugle Corps and the Envoys of Newburgh. He loved attending the local contests and shows. He never missed a local parade.
His beloved dogs were an important part of his life. His house always had a spoiled Boston Terrier in it with Dad being the biggest "spoiler" of all. Biscuits will be handed out in heaven!
Jerry is survived by three children: Mary with her husband, Gery Selemon of Newburgh, Jerry Whitaker of Walden, and Lois Whitaker of Newburgh; two grandchildren: Michael Selemon and his wife, Ksenia, and Nicholas Selemon; two great grandchildren: Evelyn and Allison Selemon; sister-in-law, Claire Whitaker of Newburgh and many loving nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy; infant daughter, Geraldine; brother, Francis "Bud" Whitaker and sister Sheila Oliansky. (recordonline.com)
He will be missed by all, but left us all with so much love and dignity! Rest in peace Dear Brother!

The Walden Fire Dept. was excited and eager to Welcome Home one its OWN. One of the Department's members suffered a serious injury while at a training incident. He was then transported via Helicopter to Westchester Medical Center where he underwent several surgeries.
After speaking to Kevin today he told me that he was sincerely touched in the warm welcome he received from his brothers and sisters and he is just excited to be home. He in fact is eager to get back into serving his community.
Kevin once again on behalf of the Dept. we are glad you are back home brother!

On Saturday April 26, 2014 the Walden Fire Dept. held its open house. It was a great day for the Dept. to showcase what we it does and provide some fun activities to the community members.
The dept. provided some great BBQ that was cooked by its members and some great refreshments. There was also some great deserts that included baked goods, cupcakes, and a ton of candy.
The members also walked the visitors through the different steps of “cutting up” a car with the “jaws of life.” In fact some of the visitors even had the opportunity to participate, and they all stated that it was a whole lot of fun and much tougher then they thought it would be.
Some visitors also elected to climb a few ladders and to assist with putting “out” an “oven fire”. So the activities where nonstop for all the visitors regardless of age.
Plans are already on the way for next year’s open house! We all look forward to seeing you then, please keep an eye out for the date!

The members and officers of the Walden Fire Dept. were proud to work with the Walden Baptist Church this week for Operation Dalmatian a toy drive. Between many local schools, organizations, and churches we had the ability to help raise enough toys for the children in over 100 local families. During this week the members and officers of the dept. had the opportunity to go collect, sort, wrap and ultimately deliver these toys to the families with the fire trucks of the Walden Fire Department. The Walden Fire Department has been working with the Walden Baptist Church every year for this worthy cause for over a decade. Just another example of how the members of this Dept. enjoy giving back to the community that they live and serve in.
We would like to wish everyone in the community Happy Holidays and a safe New Year!
