The Walden Fire Department Fire Explorer Program is a youth program affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America. The program is designed to allow male and female youth, between the ages of 14 and 20, to explore a career in the fire service. The explorers receive training similar to volunteer and professional firefighters, including basic fire chemistry, hose evolutions, ladder operations, medical and CPR training, hazardous materials, and auto extrication.

The training program is intense and demanding, however the rewards are increased character and the understanding of what it takes to pursue a career in the fire service.

Fire Explorers receive the following benefits:

The opportunity to learn teamwork and leadership skills! Competitive activities at Fire Explorer Musters Challenge, Hard Work, Fun, and Friendship! The ability to participate at the FASNY Youth Day. You would also become eligible to receive scholarships and awards from FASNY, IAFC, NYSAFC, NFPA, and many others.

Basic requirements:

Between 14 and 20 years old
Completion of the 8th grade

On 3/21/16 The Walden Fire Dept. was dispatched as Mutual Aid to a Hay / Brush Fire in the Campbell Hall Fire District. Within minutes Asst. Chief Sager and Asst. Chief Totonis responded to the call along with Tanker 239, Brush Truck 242, and UTV 243. Chief Williams and the rest of the apparatus stayed in our district to ensure proper coverage and to coordinate relief manpower later in the day for the initial crew.

Upon arrival to the scene the men and women of the Walden Fire Dept. found hundreds of bales hay on fire with brush fires starting in the surrounding area. In fact the structures around the farm faced the danger of being engulfed in the flames.

Walden Units remained on scene for over 12 hours battling the flames with wind gusts hitting more than 30 miles per hour. Along with Walden over 30 Departments between 3 counties helped in the efforts to contain the blaze.
