Richard "Ric" R. Cagney of Walden, NY, a life member of the Walden Fire Department and a resident of the area, passed away Thursday, November 10, 2016, at home. He was 71.
The son of the late Donald and Mary Burnett Cagney, he was born October 18, 1945.
Ric was a 52 year member of the Walden Fire Department, Orange Hose Company No. 1, where he served as the current treasurer of the Department and on the Board of Directors. He was also the current treasurer, past senior driver, and ex-captain of the Orange Hose Company No.1. He was a former commisioner of the Walden Fire District, a Walden Fire Police Officer, was a member of the Orange County Fire Advisory Board, and past member of Walden Fire District #2 in Buffalo, NY. Ric had the distinction of responding to the most alarms in the Walden Fire District for the last decade.
Ric served in the Marines during the Vietnam War. He was a retired sales representative for IBM, and former owner of the Walden Tire Shop and the Walden Feed Store, now known as the Walden Animal Deli. He was also an avid UCONN Basketball fan and had recently become an avid fisherman.
Survivors include his Sister, Janet McGrath; two Nephews, Brad McGrath and Bryan McGrath, Sister-In-Law Claire Cagney
Along with his parents, he was pre-deceased by his brother Jack Cagney.
Visitation will be Tuesday, November 15, 2016 from 5-7:30 p.m., with Firematic services at 7:30, at Millspaugh Funeral Home, 22 Bank St.Walden, NY 12586.
A funeral service will be Wednesday, November 16, 2016, 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Wallkill Valley Cemetery in Walden, NY.

On 9/3/16 and 9/4/16 the Walden Fire Department provided apparatus and manpower to the New York Air National Guard (Stewart) for the NY Air Show. During the show the highlighted even was the USAF Thunderbirds. The Department provided the UTV and Tanker for support.

Last night the Walden FD held its 2016 Installation Dinner. Line Officers and Civil Officers were sworn in.
Awards were presented to members of Mobile Life for Life Saving of a Walden FireFighter and FireFighter of the Year was awarded to FF Anthony Buccieri as well for their actions in saving the life of one of Walden FD's member at a 5th Alarm fire on June 20th 2015.

On 3/21/16 The Walden Fire Dept. was dispatched as Mutual Aid to a Hay / Brush Fire in the Campbell Hall Fire District. Within minutes Asst. Chief Sager and Asst. Chief Totonis responded to the call along with Tanker 239, Brush Truck 242, and UTV 243. Chief Williams and the rest of the apparatus stayed in our district to ensure proper coverage and to coordinate relief manpower later in the day for the initial crew.
Upon arrival to the scene the men and women of the Walden Fire Dept. found hundreds of bales hay on fire with brush fires starting in the surrounding area. In fact the structures around the farm faced the danger of being engulfed in the flames.
Walden Units remained on scene for over 12 hours battling the flames with wind gusts hitting more than 30 miles per hour. Along with Walden over 30 Departments between 3 counties helped in the efforts to contain the blaze.

Today the members of the Walden Fire Dept. attended the Funeral of Captain Jack Rose of the Mt. Marion FD, in which he passed away in the Line of Duty. Captain Rose was in the process of fighting a structure fire last week in Ulster County when the incident occurred.
The members of The Walden Fire Dept. also responded to Stewart ANG Base to pay honor to the TSgt Joseph Lemm of the 105th Security Forces Squadron, since he was brought home today. TSgt Joseph Lemm was killed in action in Afghanistan and was also a Police Detective with the NYPD for over 15 Years.
You both served the communities well!
